Discount codes

Private codes a customer types at the dumpster checkout: flat or percent, dated, limited to specific sizes, with usage per code. Junk removal uses promotions instead.

This applies to both workflows

What are the two workflows?

A discount code is a private word you give to a customer -- a repeat contractor, a neighbour, a referral -- that they type at checkout. You create them under Settings > Money > Discounts.

Codes work on the dumpster checkout only

A code is typed on the Review & Pay step of an online rental booking. Junk removal has no checkout to type one into -- junk is quoted, then booked -- so junk uses "book online and save" promotions on load sizes instead. They are on the other tab of the same Discounts screen and get their own page.

What a code is

FieldWhat it does
CodeThe word the customer types. Letters, numbers, dashes and underscores. Matching ignores case and spaces, so save10 and SAVE10 are the same code.
TypePercent off or Dollar amount off.
Starts / Last day it worksOptional. Both dates are inclusive, on your calendar.
ActiveOff means the code is refused, whatever its dates say.
Which rentalsAll rentals, or a list of specific container sizes. A code limited to sizes is refused on any other size.

What the customer sees

  1. 1They reach Review & Pay in the booking flow. A Discount code field is there.
  2. 2They type the code and press Apply. The total updates, or a sentence says why not: expired, not started yet, not valid on that size.
  3. 3They pay the discounted total. The card is charged that amount in full.

The field only appears once you have a usable code

A customer never sees an empty Discount code box. It shows up on your checkout the moment one active, in-date code exists, and disappears again when none does.

What it comes off

A code reduces the base price, delivery fee, extra days and add-ons -- everything the customer agrees to at checkout. Tax is recalculated on the discounted figure. It never touches the weight charge, because that is settled after pickup from the scale ticket and is a cost passed through, not a price you set.

What you see

  • A visible line on the job and on the invoice: Discount SAVE10 (10% off), with the negative amount, so the totals still add up.
  • Usage under each code: *"Used on 3 paid bookings, $95.50 off in total."* A checkout that applied the code and never paid is shown but not counted.
  • The code in your Stripe dashboard, on the payment's details.

The rules you will hit

  • A code that takes the total under $0.50 is refused online. A card cannot be charged nothing, so the customer is told to contact you to book instead. A free rental is a phone call.
  • A code that has been used can be turned off, but not deleted. Its cost stays visible in your usage. A code that was never applied can be deleted.
  • Bookings you make yourself do not take a code. When you book on a customer's behalf, enter the agreed price directly.
  • The whole feature has a switch under Settings > Platform > Features (Discount codes). Off, no field shows and every code is refused.

Common mistakes

"I made a code and my checkout does not show a place to type it."

Check the code is Active and inside its dates, and that the Discount codes feature is on. The field appears only when a customer could actually use a code.

"A customer used a code and the weight charge was not discounted."

Correct. The weight charge is a cost from the scale, added after pickup. Codes reduce the checkout total only.

"I want to delete a code so it stops working."

Turn it off. A used code cannot be deleted, so that its cost stays on the record. Off has the same effect on the customer.

"I want a junk removal customer to get $20 off for booking online."

That is a promotion, not a code -- the Junk Removal Promotions tab on the same screen. A junk customer never types anything; the discount shows in the price they see.
