Use your own domain for your HaulHQ site

Your HaulHQ site can answer at a domain you own. Turn on Custom domain, enter the domain, and add the records HaulHQ shows at your registrar. HaulHQ does not sell or renew domains.

This applies to both workflows

What are the two workflows?

Your HaulHQ site can answer at a domain you own, such as yourcompany.com. You turn it on yourself, and you keep paying for the domain at your registrar, the company you bought it from.

Opt-in, and off until you turn it on

Custom domain is opt-in and off by default. Nothing about your site changes until you turn it on in Settings -> Features.

HaulHQ does not sell or renew domains

We don't sell domains and we don't renew them. The domain stays at your registrar, and the registrar renews it and bills you for it. HaulHQ looks after your site's security certificate and renews that automatically.

Set it up

  1. 1Turn on Custom domain in Settings -> Features. Until it is on, the Domain tab does not show.
  2. 2Open Settings -> Website -> Domain and enter the domain you own, the way you want people to see it (for example yourcompany.com). If you enter the bare domain, HaulHQ also sets up www.yourcompany.com to send visitors to it.
  3. 3Copy the DNS records HaulHQ shows under Add these records where you bought the domain. They come from HaulHQ, not from this page. Use the exact Type, Name and Value shown.
  4. 4At your registrar, open the DNS settings for the domain and add or change those records: the one for the bare domain (the apex), and the one for www if it is listed. Do not use a forwarding or masking option anywhere.
  5. 5Wait. The status on the Domain tab moves from Starting setup to Waiting for your DNS records to Live. Most domains are live within an hour. Press Check again to see the latest status.
  6. 6Check the site by loading your domain in a private window on a phone with Wi-Fi off. Your own computer may keep an old address for a while.

Once it is live, your HaulHQ address (yourname.myhaulhq.com) sends visitors to your domain, so links you have already shared keep working.

The records, and what each one is for

The Domain tab shows each record with its value. This page does not list values, because they come from HaulHQ for your domain, and a guessed value will not work.

  • The record for the bare domain (yourcompany.com; many registrars show its name as @) sends your domain to HaulHQ.
  • The record for www, if it is listed, sends www.yourcompany.com to HaulHQ, which passes visitors on to your domain.
  • A TXT record, only if HaulHQ shows one, proves the domain is yours. It appears when the domain was used on another account before; the status then reads Confirming you own this domain.

A registrar forwarding or parking page is not the same thing

Many registrars offer a forwarding option or a parking page for a domain. Neither one connects your domain to HaulHQ, and either can override the records you add. Don't use them for this domain; use only the DNS records HaulHQ shows.

Removing a domain

Press Remove domain on the Domain tab. Your HaulHQ address (yourname.myhaulhq.com) then serves your HaulHQ site again. After you remove a domain here, delete its records at your registrar, or the domain will show an error page.

Common mistakes

"It has said Waiting for your DNS records for hours."

The record was not saved at the registrar, or an old record for the same name still points somewhere else. Check the DNS settings against the Domain tab, delete any old record for the bare domain or www, then press Check again.

"I removed my domain and now it shows an error page."

Delete its records at your registrar. They still send the domain to HaulHQ, and HaulHQ no longer serves it.

"My computer still shows the old page."

Your computer or network can keep the old address for a while. Wait for it to clear, or check on a phone with Wi-Fi off.

"Changing these records will break my email."

It will not, as long as you only add or change the records HaulHQ shows. Leave your email (MX) records as they are.

What this page does not cover

  • Buying a domain. HaulHQ does not sell domains. Buy one from any registrar, then start at step 1.
  • Renewing a domain. Your registrar renews it and bills you for it, not HaulHQ.
  • Moving a domain to another registrar. That is the registrar's transfer process. To stop using the domain with HaulHQ, remove it on the Domain tab.
